- Veteran TV writer Hall has crafted a powerful tale of characters beset by a demonic curse that has driven generations of family members to murder and mayhem. Engrossing and terrifying, the story suffers from only one notable abridgment problem: a prologue that seems unrelated until much later in the story. Anthony Heald conveys the extreme emotions of the story without succumbing to overstatement. Using intonation, accent and emphasis, he clearly and insightfully portrays different personalities (including Jesus and the devil). This production is hard to turn off before the end. -- M.A.M. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

- In this pastoral coming-of-age story, set in a drive-in theater in '60's era Jacksonville, Florida, the adolescent narrator falls in love with the daughter of his father's bitterest enemy. Anthony Heald reads the somewhat precious first novel perfectly, sharpening the characterization, bringing out all the gentle humor, nostalgia and Southern gracefulness, while somehow remaining interesting even where the author sags. The Hammer of Eden (1998 Random House ISBN: 0375404406)
- The tension ratchets up quickly in this abridged reading of Ken Follett's thriller. Actor Anthony Heald --a movie and audiobook veteran--uses a breathy, urgent delivery to spin the tale of ecoterrorist cultists and the unlikely heroes who must stop them before they hammer California with a major man-made earthquake. Follett has real contempt for his aging-hippie villains, which Heald gleefully communicates through lines of faux sagacity like, "Money makes you poor" and "Marriage is the greatest infidelity," and by having the head bad guy clear his conscience of a cold-blooded murder by reciting a nursery rhyme. -- Amazon.com Audiobooks by Lou Schuler.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997 Random House ISBN: 0375402314)
- The South is mysterious, with mores and conventions foreign to the hustle and transience of the North. In Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil a Northern writer who lives half the time in Savannah provides a firsthand look at these mysteries, at the charisma behind the South's particular brand of good and evil. At the heart of the book is the story of Savannah's most celebrated murder, in which an eccentric antique dealer is accused of having killed his male companion. Anthony Heald performs admirably, reading this mysterious tale in a variety of soft Southern tones. Each character's individual cadence and personality are brought to life through his skillful voice. Night Magic (1995 Simon & Schuster ISBN: 0671885367)
The Pelican Brief (1997 Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub ISBN: 0553470469)
- Anthony Heald gives an uncommonly compelling performance narrating this fast-paced legal thriller. The action begins with the fierce assassinations of two Supreme Court justices. Too unlikely to be coincidental, the murders have no identifiable connection until a young law student uncovers a hidden link, exposing herself and those around her to deadly consequences. Heald uses the flexibility of his voice to conjure up a large cast of diverse characters. He crafts his delivery expertly, heightening the already substantial suspense and carrying the story to its dramatic conclusion. -- Amazon.com Audiobooks by George Laney.
- Grisham's story of the murder of two disparate Supreme Court Justices has a scope that could make abridgment difficult. Fortunately, all the plot threads are in place here: the sexual trysts, the murder investigation, and the political maneuverings which extend from the White House to the cloistered halls of the Supreme Court itself. A story this big has to be fun, and it is. While the reading seems tight at first, actor Anthony Heald soon warms to the material. Or perhaps the breakneck pace of the story takes over. The tapes are crisp and clear, and occasional music accentuates the suspense--adding to the fun. M.J.C. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
NEW! The Political Brain (2007 Blackstone Audio ISBN-10: 143320892X)
Praying for Sleep (1994 Penguin Audio ISBN: 0453008771)
- A murderer escapes from an asylum for the criminally insane with only one thought in mind: to locate the woman whose testimony convicted him. Law officers, a professional tracker, and the woman's husband are all on his trail. The reader's fine skill in varying voice tone is necessary since almost all the characters are men. The book depends on abrupt shifts of point of view to carry the narrative along. Although the character voices are confusing initially, they're more comprehensible as the listener becomes familiar with the protagonists. Heald's talent builds tension, provides excitement and adds to the unexpected twist at the conclusion. D.M.W. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

NEW! Screwed: The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class (2007 Blackstone Audio ISBN-10: 1433215136)
NEW! Shattered Air: A True Account of Catastrophe and Courage on Yosemite's Half Dome (2007 Blackstone Audio ISBN-10: 1433211122)
NEW! The Steel Wave: A Novel of World War II (May 2008 Random House Audio ISBN-10: 0739334654)
The Story of B (1996 Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub ISBN: 0553478176)
The Things They Carried (1991 Harper-Audio ISBN: 1559943610)
True Crime (1995 Random House ISBN: 0679444556)
- Anthony Heald succeeds in his chilling mission to entangle us in this riveting thriller when a hard-boiled, sleazeball of a reporter discovers that a death row denizen may be innocent. This production wins on all counts; it's a fast-paced, absorbing story with consistently even pacing, and it never feels as if the plot has been cut. A strong reader with a powerful voice, Heald is adept at conveying both the cynicism and sardonic humor in the story. The action takes place in one blazing hot summer day, and Heald's timing convinces us of the urgency inherent in this drama. R.O.F. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
NEW! The Ultimate Sales Machine (2007 Blackstone Audio ISBN-10: 1433208806)
Unfinished Lives: What If? (1997 Dove Books Audio ISBN: 0787112399)
Where the Red Fern Grows (2001 Listening Library ISBN: 0807204684)
- In spite of being written during the Depression, there is a timelessness to this simple story. Young Billy works two long, hard years to earn the money to realize his dream_to own a pair of dogs for hunting raccoons. Rawls instills this autobiographical piece with a strong sense of right and wrong, as well as innocence and integrity. Anthony Heald is wonderful with this action and emotion-laden story. He aptly delivers a tone and sense appropriate to the text. He also does a particularly good representation of young and old voices and a variety of Southern accents. This title is an excellent selection for family listening or for anyone desiring an uplifting, but realistic tale. S.G.B. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
Wolf Story (1997 Listening Library ISBN: 0807278874)
- What starts as a simple bedtime story quickly escalates into a marathon of storytelling as 5-year-old Michael and his friend Stefano alternately listen to and inspire Michael's father in his role of creative storyteller. While Heald uses his natural vocal range for the part of Michael's father, he easily slips into the high-pitched, youthful voices of Michael and Stefano, catching their energy and enthusiasm, as well as their mischievous sides. The bedtime story features Heald's delightful characterization of the wolf, using a gruff New York City accent and demeanor in dramatic contrast to the soft, suave voice of Rainbow the hen. Capturing the humor and natural flow of the story, Heald's performance will surely delight youngsters in elementary school, as well as parents who listen with them. Slave Ship (Star Wars: Bounty Hunter Wars, Book 2) (1998 Bantam Books ISBN: 0553525336)
- Prince Xizor, servant of the Emperor and leader of the mysterious Black Sun organization, has set a trap for Boba Fett--by dangling the largest bounty ever offered for the capture of renegade stormtrooper Trhin Voss'on't. How will Boba Fett escape? Book 2 in The Bounty Hunter Wars series, Star Wars: Slave Ship is a good story made even better thanks to Tony Award-nominee Anthony Heald's performance. Heald captures the drama of the story with his wide range of voices--from the sniveling tones of the arachnoid assembler Kud'ar Mub'at to the softer sounds of Neelah, the dancing girl rescued from Jabba the Hutt's palace. The abridgment allows you to follow the major threads of the story, but misses some of the more convoluted twists--a reasonable trade, considering that the audiobook is enhanced by sound effects and John Williams's music from the Star Wars trilogy films. --Amazon.com Audiobooks by C.B. Delaney
- What a great audio performer is Anthony Heald! He wends his way through a narrative replete with tongue-twisting alien names and never once slips up. He gives full-flavored performance of humans and aliens, spider-like and otherwise, and is instantly believable. And behind him run the thundering Star Wars music and the intricately detailed Star Wars sound effects, the latter so finely tuned that even apparently distant and faint sounds are intensely real. The story centers one one of the fans' favorite minor characters, the anti-hero bounty hunter Boba Fett, as he captures bad guys in the face of much opposition. D.R.W. Vision of the Future (Star Wars: The Hand of the Thrawn, Book 2) (1998 Bantam Books ISBN: 0553479210)
- Grand Admiral Thrawn, long believed dead, has returned. Civil war is imminent in the New Republic. And what--or who--is the Hand of Thrawn? Vision of the Future is the conclusion of the two-part Hand of Thrawn series, written by Timothy Zahn, Hugo Award-winning author of the original trilogy based on the Star Wars films. The book is read by Tony Award-nominee Anthony Heald, who uses his theatrical talents to perform everything from love scenes to fight scenes as the story unfolds. His range of voices--from the "distinctive, somewhat prissy" voice of C-3PO to the gruff cynicism of Han Solo--is complemented by selections from John Williams's score and sound effects from the Star Wars films. --Amazon.com Audiobooks by C.B.
